It’s Time To Question Facebook Likes

Pluginin to Support Comment: Paul from Digital Music News is asking the same questions Pluginin to Support has been wondering lately. What is the real value of the like button on Facebook? Is it fact or fiction? You be the judge. Here’s what Paul had to say:

Last week, a troubling study emerged. It found that Facebook Music was failing to increase the number of Likes for artists, despite a huge kickoff and lots of integrated music partners.  The gains for artists – and their labels and managers – could ultimately be neglible.

But that led to another question: why do we care so much about Facebook Likes, anyway?  Do they really mean that much for artists in end?  Here’s an argument, offered in the comment stream by C. Brett Campbell, for why Likes need to be deprioritized in our marketing outlooks.  Campbell, aka Jedi Brett, is one of the authors behind indie-focused Middle Tennessee Music.

“If we are using ‘likes’ to measure fans (or worse, self-worth), we are working under a false premise.

  • Likes are generally given in passing, they give no indication that you will see the person again.
  • The term “Fan” is short for Fanatic – a fanatic is someone who will come to all of your shows, buy your shirts and all of your records. They will poster their bedroom walls with your likeness, and copy CDs and make their friends listen to them.
  • There is the case in which an artist or company creates a new page and it makes a big splash with those who are already fans finding out and Liking the page. But how many of those engage again?
  • The point of the frictionless sharing through the ticker is Not to draw attention to the Musician, but to the Spotify (or other) linked service.

In the long run, as an artist, I prefer Fans to Likes. It is our duty as artists to produce the best materials we can. Only then do we find real fans. Facebook and all the others can help, and they can make us feel good, after all we do tend to have a bit of Narcicus ingrained, but the true metrics lie in shared material, interactive comments and as GE or Ford will tell you, SALES.”
