Dancers and Choreographers Job Outlook 2012

Employment of dancers is projected to grow 11 percent from 2010 to 2020.

Dance companies are not expected to add many jobs over the decade.

There is a long-term trend in which the public appears to be losing interest in traditional dance also is slowing down the growth of dance companies. On the other hand, a growing interest in dance in pop culture may provide opportunities in fields outside of dance companies, such as on TV or in movies, casinos, or theme parks.

Employment of choreographers is projected to grow 24 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. The growing interest in dance in pop culture is expected to lead more people to enroll in dance schools, and growing enrollment should create more jobs for choreographers. In addition, the number of dance schools is growing faster than the number of employees of dance schools. Because they are needed at all schools, choreographers may experience faster employment growth than other employees at dance schools.

Dancers and choreographers face intense competition and the number of applicants is expected to vastly exceed the number of job openings.

Poet Career Outlook

Poet:  A Poet writes poetry that is rhymed or free verse. Poets are hired to interpret and represent a client’s creative needs into written prose. Often working for publishing companies and advertising agencies, Poets write poetry books, songs, advertising jingles and verses for greeting cards.

Skills Required for a Career in Poetry

Poets need an excellent understanding of language, poetic voice, style and structure. They should have a diverse writing portfolio and good presentation skills to gain clients. Writers in general often work on strict deadlines, so the ability to be creative under pressure is helpful.

Required Education for a Career in Poetry

Successful Poets use their creativity and advanced education to write poetry that is marketable. There are many 2-year, junior colleges and 4-year colleges and universities that offer liberal arts programs and degrees for writers who want to become Poets. English literature, composition, creative writing and poetic structure classes are usually included in a liberal arts degree curriculum.

Career and Economic Outlook for Poetry

The Library of Congress website, http://www.loc.gov, reports that the U.S. Poet Laureate, the official promoter of poetry in the United States appointed by the Librarian of Congress, is given a stipend of $35,000. Typically, however, poets are self-employed doing freelance writing projects for book and magazine publishers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), http://www.bls.org, states that the need for writers and authors will continue grow, partially, because of the high rate of turnover of freelance writers. The popularity of venues for spoken word poetry and online poetry blogs have become new revenue resources for Poets.

Interior Design Career Outlook

By Pluginin

Interior Design Career Outlook

English: Residential Green Design

Image via Wikipedia

Employment change. Employment of interior designers is expected to grow 19 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. An increasing interest in interior design and awareness of its benefits will increase demand for designers. As businesses realize the improvements that can be made to worker and customer satisfaction through good design, they will use interior designers to redesign their offices and stores.

Homeowners are increasingly using the services of interior designers when they plan new additions, remodel aging kitchens and bathrooms, and update the general décor of their home. Many homeowners also have requested design help in creating year-round outdoor living spaces and home theater systems.

Demand for interior design services from the healthcare industry is expected to be high because of an anticipated increase in demand for facilities that will accommodate the aging population. Designers will be needed to make these facilities as comfortable and homelike as possible for patients. There will also be demand from businesses in the hospitality industry—hotels, resorts, and restaurants—where good design work can help attract more business.

Some interior designers choose to specialize in one design element to create a niche for themselves in an increasingly competitive market. The demand for kitchen and bath design is growing in response to the growing demand for home remodeling. Designs using the latest technology in, for example, home theaters, state-of-the-art conference facilities, and security systems are expected to be especially popular. In addition, demand for home spas, indoor gardens, and outdoor living space should continue to increase.

Extensive knowledge of ergonomics and green design are expected to be in demand. Ergonomic design has gained in popularity with the growth in the elderly population and workplace safety requirements. The public’s growing awareness of environmental quality and the growing number of individuals with allergies and asthma are expected to increase the demand for green design.

Job prospects. Interior designers are expected to face keen competition for available positions because many talented individuals are attracted to this profession. Individuals with little or no formal training in interior design, as well as those lacking creativity and perseverance, will find it very difficult to establish and maintain a career in this occupation. Designers with formal training or experience in green or energy efficient-design in particular are expected to have better job prospects due to increased interest in this area.

As the economy grows, more private businesses and consumers will request the services of interior designers. However, design services are considered a luxury expense and may be subject to fluctuations in the economy. For example, decreases in consumer and business income and spending caused by a slow economy can have a detrimental effect on employment of interior designers.

Artist Management Career Outlook

By Pluginin

2011 saw a big concentration on artist and music discovery and marketing platforms fighting to fit into the new spaces the internet has opened.  As I sit here enjoying my coffee I realized that managers, public relations, booking agents didn’t really have a loud presence in 2011 because their roles as we have known it has also changed.  Artists in the digital era has proven that getting signed to a record deal is not the highest priority anymore.  The managers who concentrate on merchandising, aggressive branding to establish career longevity, comprehension of  new copyright laws as it pertains to music and performance, and of course social media platforms.

Formal education for music managers can be debatable, as talent and ability are the main deciding factors when it comes to employment.

Music Management Careers Salary Expectations

According to SimplyHired.com, the average annual salary of music managers in July 2010 was $58,000.   The salaries of music managers fluctuate greatly depending on the particular industry. Other variables include experience level, education level, geographic location, employer size, and employment type.

Music Management Careers Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 1,969.5 people employed in the arts, entertainment, and recreation industry. Of that, just 109 people, or 5.6 percent, were employed as event promoter, agents, and managers.

Employment opportunities for those working as managers in the arts are expected to grow 13.7 percent over the 2008-2018 decade. This growth, which is slightly faster than average for all occupations, has resulted in new education programs and certification options, making competition for these positions even greater.

Though many working in the field of arts management do go on to obtain masters degrees in a specified field of interest such as arts administration, in this field, career experience is still valued higher than education level. Those with experience in marketing and business will have the best opportunities.

Photographer Career Outlook

Employment of photographers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2016. Photographers can expect keen competition for job openings because the work is attractive to many people.

Skills Required

A natural inclination towards art and never-ceasing creativity is a high bonus for the working photographer.  Having these qualities propels one to increase in experience and jump ranks.  Also, the task of dealing with a lot of different people falls in the category of flexibility, therefore acquiring these talents is also a priority.  An above average technical know-how of your genre (whether it be Portrait or Nature Photography) is highly prized and expertise in more than one genre is always a good asset to have.

A business mind-set as a photographer, apart from the artistic perception, is also an important career building block.

Earnings

Naturally, photographers who work full time or at least have steady salary, tend to earn more than the self employed photographer.  Freelance photography can be very hard to sustain financially, as it cuts holes in one’s pockets due to upkeep (maintenance and repair).  There are a few freelance photographers successful enough to do this but it takes more patience to generate enough profit from the work.  Intense planning is needed before thinking about buying expensive cameras and other equipment.

The average salary for the photographer is estimated around $27,000 every year, with as high as $50,000 dollar earnings and as low as $15,000.

Working Hours

Obviously, the self employed gains the upper hand with this one.  The salaried photographer tends to work irregular hours depending on company projects.  Long working nights tend to be random and one must get used to this kind of work ethic.  The 40 hour a week estimate is the average 5 day breakdown (depending on the nature and genre of the project).  This also tends to vary with different companies so nothing is set in stone.
