Composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis.  First released in 1972 on the “Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters” documentary.  Inspired by a visit to London, where Richard saw an old Bing Crosby 1940 film called Rhythm on the River, he noticed that they kept referring to the struggling songwriter’s greatest composition, “Goodbye to Love”. He says `You never hear it in the movie, they just keep referring to it,’ and he immediately envisioned the tune, and lyrics starting with:

Top 20 Prince Recordings

20.   Rainbow Children 

A strong comeback album that reminded fans of  his early career.

19.   For You

A must have for completest and for those who’s curious of Prince’s early career.

18.   Rave Un 2 The Joy Fantastic

A focused and energetic recording from his later period.   He’s happy.

17.   Come

Not a popular recording at it’s release, but has matured into a masterpiece.

16.     NPG – TV Channel (1980-1987)

A complete history of all of Prince’s live television performances and speeches from awards shows. The sound is muffled but a necessity for  completest.

15.   Prince

Another must have for completest and for those who’s curious of Prince’s early career.

14.  4 Those Of U On Valium

This bootleg find Prince at the height as a performer. This is his first performance without The Revolution and the introduction of drummer Sheila E. and saxophonist Eric Leeds. The sound is ok but a hot show.

13.   Crystal Ball

A collection of some of Prince most prolific work only available on bootleg.  Lots of recordings are from the classic Parade period when he was working frequently with The Revolution as a unit. What separates this legal release vs the many bootlegs are the remastering and the addition of newer bootlegs. Crystal Ball is for completest only.

12.   Emancipation

Prince’s first return to recording quality records. This is one of Prince’s most diverse but cohesive works from the 90′s. It’s still great for partys.

11.   Dirty Mind

Dirty Mind was ahead of its time to R&B radio when release but would go on to become 1980′s urban rebellion classic. A must have!

10.  Controversy

Prince begins to find his groove with this party record. This album also established his template of delivering sensual love songs just listen to “Do Me Baby”.

9.   Small Club

A must have for true Prince fans. It get no better than having access to an after hours Prince show. These shows were legendary during the late 80′s. The band is relax and funky but best of all the sound quality is excellent.

8.   Batman

Fun recording!

7.  Sign “O” The Times

Prince 1st release after firing The Revolutions.   Some of the songs are credited to The Revolutions but this is clearly a departure from the work he did in previous recording.  Outstanding drummer by Sheila E.

6.    Lovesexy

Still ahead of the musical curve in 1988 Prince delivers his answer to the classic “Black Album”. Big European music influence.

5.   Livesexy 1988

Prince was in top form in 1988 and this live recording of his Lovesexy Tour is proof. From the initial song Prince and his new band take you on a musical journey that makes your head swirl. Wonderful bootleg concert a must for all Prince fans and completest.

4.    Around The World In A Day

Around the World is Prince’s most experimental album of his career.  At this time he was heavily influenced by The Beatles, Jazz, and Psychedelic Rock. It’s a interesting listen if you are into genre blending and experimentation.

3.   Purple Rain

I bet you thought Purple Rain was going to be my first choice. Well I fooled you. This record needs no introduction..

2.   1999

Classic! Classic! Classic! He became the man with this record.

1.   Under The Cherry Moon

Prince’s most sophisticated and lush recording. This recording introduced horns and strings from the late Clare Fischer to Prince’s music for the very first time. Very high period
