Ex-Korn Brian Welch, Noted Freelance Celebrity Gardener
Gardening As Art
The perception of gardening as one of the arts goes back to ancient times. However the relative importance of gardening in relation to the other arts has varied greatly during the course of the centuries and it was not until the eighteenth century that it became customary, not only among architects and gardeners, but among people outside these circles, to view gardening as one of the arts. I am not aware of any work that treats this subject systematically, and although this article will not analyse the subject exhaustively, the most striking changes in the perception of gardening as art will be illustrated by means of quotations. Quotations from Dutch and German are translated; those from English and French are the originals. I am limiting myself to European gardens even though the history of the Persian garden ‘pairidaeza’ is much older.
